Top Healthcare Technology Companies To Invest In 2014

How much extra money can I get each year if I delay taking my Social Security benefits?

Delaying your Social Security benefits beyond your full retirement age is a great way to boost your annual payouts for life.

SEE ALSO: 10 Things You Must Know About Social Security

You can start receiving payouts as early as age 62, but your annual benefits will be about 25% less than if you wait until full retirement age to start receiving payouts (if you were born from 1943 to 1954, your full retirement age is 66; the age gradually increases to 67, for people born in 1960 or later).

Every year after your full retirement age that you wait to claim benefits will boost your annual payouts by another 8%, until you reach age 70.

Waiting to take benefits at age 70 will give you 32% more in benefits than if you took them at age 66, and 76% more than taking them at age 62. You need to consider your life expectancy when deciding when to take benefits, but if you can afford to delay benefits until age 70 and live past age 82 or so, youl receive more in lifetime income from Social Security than if you wait until full retirement age (and your spouse can benefit, too, if you wait to take benefits).

We got several questions about Kayne Anderson Energy Total Return Fund (NYSE: KYE) during the chat. The main advantage of closed-end MLP funds is the diversification they provide, along with the convenience of a 1099 miscellaneous income tax form instead of having to deal with K-1 forms from each individual MLP. This makes a closed-end MLP fund a more attractive option for an IRA.

The payout ratio is an excellent tool for dividend investors. Without it, it's tough to judge how sustainable a company's dividend is. Though a lower payout ratio is always better than a high payout ratio, some companies can easily cope with higher ratios than others. In the video below, Fool contributor Daniel Sparks looks atApple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) , Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) , and Waste Management (NYSE: WM  ) , illustrating how the ratio deserves careful attention during analysis.

Furthermore, the company has a wide economic moat largely stemming from three factors: its efficient scale, its high switching costs and its intangible assets. Of the 20 commercial hazardous-waste landfills operational in the U.S., the majority are run by US Ecology and its main competitors Waste Management Inc. (WM), and Clean Harbors Inc. (CLH). With barriers to entry stemming from regulatory permits, and a limited market size, ECOL has managed to achieve an efficient scale in the market with five hazardous waste-sides. The company intangible assets consist of long-term regulatory permits, which enable US Ecology to posses a atekeeper privilegeregarding barriers to new entrants. In addition, customer switching costs are high, thus further adding to the firm ability to sustain growth in the long term.

But it was the cause of the Dow's January decline that likely led investors to jump back into the bond market. Sluggishness in the U.S. economy and threats of economic trouble overseas were enough to lead investors back to the safe haven of Treasuries, leading to gains of almost 8% for the iShares 20+ Year Treasury ETF (NYSEMKT: TLT  ) by the time the Dow hit bottom on the first trading session of February. Other types of bonds didn't post equally impressive gains, but most did climb somewhat.

It also remains worthwhile to hedge stock allocations to protect against any major downside event along the way. This includes positions with low correlations such as the PIMCO Total Return ETF (BOND) or the PIMCO Global Advantage Inflation Linked Bond ETF (ILB). This also includes allocations that are likely to rally sharply in the event of a stock pullback but can also continue to rise along with the market such as long-term Treasuries (TLT) or Build America Bonds (BAB). And despite the recent thrashing they have endured, the precious metals complex including gold (GLD), silver (SLV), platinum (PPLT) and palladium (PALL) continue to provide attractive long-term portfolio diversification benefits. I remain long all of these metals via the Central GoldTrust (GTU), the Central Fund of America (CEF), the Sprott Physical Silver Trust (PSLV) and the Sprott Physical Platinum and Palladium Trust (SPPP).

    1. Bonds
Almost across the board, bond markets suffered big losses in May. With the yield on the 10-year Treasury going from 1.67% to 2.16%, even just a half-percentage-point gain in rates was enough to send the iShares 20+ Year Treasury ETF (NYSEMKT: TLT  ) down almost 7% for the month. Shorter-duration funds didn't suffer as much, but the iShares Core Bond Market ETF (NYSEMKT: AGG  ) lost more than 2%.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury is back below three percent and falling in early trading as investors prepare for the Fed artificially holding interest rates low well into 2014. The drop in the yield caused by the rally in bonds that has the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE: TLT) up 0.6 percent to the best level in two weeks.
