Copa Holdings: Panama Profits

There are always good operators in even the worst industries. Therefore, I am recommending a leading regional airline based in Panama, says Gavin Graham, contributing editor to Internet Wealth Builder.

Copa Holdings (CPA), operates a fleet of 83 modern aircraft, with an average age of 4.3 years, consisting of 57 Boeing 737-700s, and 737-800s, and 26 Embraer 190 jets.

From its base at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City, it offers the most destinations and international flights of any hub in Latin America, including eight destinations in the US as well as Toronto.

Tocumen's convenient location, excellent weather, and sea level altitude contribute to Copa's excellent on-time record and its ability to act as the centre of a major hub-and-spoke operation, allowing passengers to reach any destination within Central and South America with only one stop.

Copa has expanded rapidly in the last decade. After going public in 2005, it used the access to public markets to grow and modernize its fleet. Also in 2005, it purchased the second largest Colombian airline, and now operates an extensive schedule of internal and international flights in that country.

Copa carried 10.1 million passengers in 2012, a 17% increase on the previous year, and experienced a 24% increase in capacity as it added ten new Boeing 737 aircraft.

With its rapid growth and profitable track record, Copa has far outperformed the S&P 500, returning 170% over the five years to the end of 2012, compared to a 12% increase in the index.

With its new membership in the Star Alliance beginning in mid-2012, Copa should benefit from increased traffic from members of other airline loyalty schemes in the alliance, especially the merged United Continental. As well, it has added new US destinations, such as Las Vegas in 2012, and Boston in 2013.

With the widening of the Panama Canal in 2016 forecast to add substantially to trade and visitors to Panama, and with the boost to its capacity through adding seven new Boeing 737-800s in 2013, it is reasonable to expect Copa's traffic to continue rising over the next few years.

Assuming that the airline keeps its costs competitive, and maintains its conservative policy of fuel hedging to offset the risk of higher prices, Copa should be able to maintain its margins at their present levels, and remain a profitable and successful airline, benefiting from the rising demand for air travel from the growing Latin American middle-class.

Top Low Price Stocks To Own Right Now

With earnings of $11-$11.50 per share projected for 2013, Copa is selling at around 12-times forecast earnings. It pays around 30% of its earnings as a single annual dividend in June of each year, giving it a yield of 1.7%, although it paid a dividend early in December 2012, to beat the change in US dividend tax law.

Copa Holdings is a buy for investors, willing to put up with the volatility inherent in airlines, as a play on growing air traffic and rising incomes in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Why Netflix Needs "Turbo" to Be a Hit

This is a big weekend for both DreamWorks Animation (NASDAQ: DWA  ) and Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) . DreamWorks' second film of the year, Turbo, hits theaters following its March release, The Croods. The company hopes Turbo performs more like that film than its Rise of the Guardians miss last year.

But Netflix investors also have reasons to root for big box office numbers here. Fool contributor Demitrios Kalogeropoulos explains why in the video below.

Thanks to two deals that the companies struck recently, he says, Turbo will be coming to Netflix streamers exclusively next year. And Netflix will also be home to a DreamWorks original series based on the Turbo characters. That makes this film unusually important for the streaming service, which is depending heavily on DreamWorks to provide popular, family-friendly content.

Apple Has a Bigger Problem Than You Think

Things just aren't getting any easier for the PC industry.

Industry tracker Gartner is out with its quarterly metrics for the computer market, and things don't look good for the desktop and laptop markets.

Worldwide shipments fell 10.9%, to 76 million units. It's the fifth straight quarter of declines for the industry. That's never happened.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) updating its operating system late last year was supposed to be the catalyst that triggered an upgrade cycle, but we're now three quarters into the Windows 8 era. It's just not going to happen. Folks are loading up on tablets, especially in emerging markets, where tablets are the new laptops. Smartphones are also dampening the demand for full-blown PCs, and that's bad news for Microsoft in a world where most tablets and smartphones run either iOS or Android.

There were some notable moves during the period. Lenovo overtook Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) to ship the most computers worldwide during the past three months. Dell (NASDAQ: DELL  ) remains a distant third.

However, things were interesting closer to home, with PC shipments only declining by 1.4%, to clock in just shy of 15 million units.

HP and Dell retained their top positions, and Dell actually saw year-over-year domestic improvement. Then we get to Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) , where the Cupertino magic is running thin.

You may notice that Mac daddy posted the largest year-over-year decline, but perhaps even more surprising is that Apple is the only one of the four largest players to actually see its market share contract during the period.

Remember Apple's halo effect? When the iPod took off, it triggered a spike in Apple computer sales. The halo effect didn't show any signs of slowing during the iPhone and iPad rollouts, but the class act of Cupertino is certainly vulnerable now.

Apple is still selling plenty of iPads and iPhones, but for some reason, the halo effect is no longer working. The consumer tech giant may have done too good a job with its mobile devices, giving Mac fans fewer reasons to pony up for new Apple computers.

There could be an even scarier explanation. What if Macs are no longer cool because Apple is pushing older iPhones and iPads that carry lower price tags, but also make Apple seem less stylish and innovative? The same halo effect that sent folks scrambling toward Apple products may now be repelling computer shoppers. That would be a dreadful scenario, and it's one that Apple better make sure isn't the case.

5 Best Penny Stocks For 2014

Forget the old adage "A penny saved is a penny earned."

When it comes to investments in energy efficiency, the payback can be 200% or even 400%, according to various studies. That's why there is a fresh push to step up our pace of energy efficiency investments, as I discussed in Part One of this two-part series.

The challenge for investors is to find companies that are squarely focused on the issue. In my first column, I noted that Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and Ingersoll-Rand (NYSE: IR) all offer a variety of efficiency-oriented products and services.

However, these companies aren't really pure plays, as they have considerable exposure to the auto industry, the defense sector and other niches that can dilute the gains they will see from rising spending on their energy efficiency gear.

3 More Dividend Stocks Shedding Coal Power

Utilities have recently turned a cold shoulder to coal, and these past couple of weeks are no exception. With new environmental regulation and rapidly changing energy prices, utilities clutching to coal might have trouble staying in the black. Here's what you need to know.

Cutting out coal
FirstEnergy (NYSE: FE  ) announced this month that it plans to shutter two coal-fired power plants in Pennsylvania by October. Coal plants are no lightweights when it comes to capacity, and the closure will knock 2,080 MW (around 10%) off FirstEnergy's total generation capacity.

But with decreasing electricity use, FirstEnergy may be making a smart decision to shrink its size. The utility's been working on its debt addiction, and excessive spending to bring its coal capacity up to environmental par isn't what FirstEnergy needs. These two plants alone would cost the company around $280 million in compliance costs, equivalent to 30% of the utility's total estimated environmental spending.

American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP  ) added its own coal-cutting announcement two days after FirstEnergy. The utility plans to retire a 585 MW facility, bringing its Ohio subsidiary's grand total to 3,123 MW of coal generation to be retired by 2016.

AEP expects to take a $150 million to $170 million non-operating pre-tax hit for Q2 but will avoid environmental regulation costs. "Current market conditions" were also cited as a main reason for the closure, a not-so-subtle assertion that coal's cost-competitive days may be behind it.

Dominion (NYSE: D  ) is dusting off three smaller coal plants for conversion to biomass. The company announced two weeks ago that its first facility is officially online, creating electricity with wood waste from nearby timber operations. The other two plants are expected to be operational by 2014, with total capacity clocking in at 153 MW.

"Clean coal" to the rescue?
Not all utilities are bidding adieu to coal just yet. Integrys' (NYSE: TEG  ) Wisconsin Public Service subsidiary is applying for a rate increase to cover "clean coal" conversion costs. The utility hopes to add a coal dust collection system to one of its coal plants. The 824 MW facility upgrade comes with a $17 million price tag, but the move would put Integrys on a straighter path to environmental compliance. If the company's recent $220 million approval  is any evidence, this latest request might just make it past Wisconsin regulators.

Can coal cut it?
In Dominion's press release, its Generation subsidiary CEO David Christian made a telling statement:

Today marks another achievement guided by Dominion's philosophy that balanced fuel diversity -- from coal to natural gas to nuclear to renewables -- leads to reasonable rates that best serve the needs and interests of customers and shareholders.

Seemingly contradictory to its latest biomass conversions, Dominion is simultaneously rejecting and embracing coal as an energy source -- and it might be right on track.

All coal is not created equal, and utilities expecting to survive will need to pick the winners and drop the losers. President Obama's latest climate change policy report made clear that existing power plants are now under the ax, meaning old coal-fired power plants will need to clean up their act . The POTUS refers to "clean coal" countless times (well, actually six) times throughout his 21-page document, sending a not-so-subtle hint to utilities about what he expects.

Utilities are making moves, but coal plants don't close in a day, and energy prices have remained extremely volatile over the past year. Coal or not, calculated decisions for the long term are the only true way to choose dividend stock winners from losers. Keep a close watch on your picks to make sure they keep pulling profits -- not pinching them.

Utilities are diversifying their energy portfolios, and wise investors should diversify their own dividend stock picks beyond energy. Dividend stocks will make you rich. It's as simple as that. While they don't garner the notability of high-flying growth stocks, they're also less likely to crash and burn. And over the long term, the compounding effect of the quarterly payouts, as well as their growth, adds up faster than most investors imagine. With this in mind, our analysts sat down to identify the absolute best of the best when it comes to rock-solid dividend stocks, drawing up a list in this free report of the only nine that fit the bill. Time To Fly High With Spirit Airlines

Florida based Spirit Airlines (SAVE) is an ultra-low cost carrier operating in the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean. Presently, the company operates approximately 200 daily flights covering 50 destinations. One unique feature that distinguishes Spirit from its competitors is its ticket pricing strategy. Unlike its competitors, which incorporate a charge for different services in the overall ticket price, Spirit separates the price allowing customers to avail different services as per their need. This pricing strategy attracts price sensitive consumers and increases its market penetration.

In this article, I have explained different factors that will influence Spirit's future performance and drive its stock price.

1) Fuel pricing
For aircraft operators, fuel cost forms a major part of the cost of operations. Therefore, it becomes necessary for the airline companies to forecast the fuel cost in order to adopt a proper pricing mechanism. The most important factors affecting jet fuel prices are the overall outlook for crude price, the refinery cost incurred to convert crude into jet fuel, and the strategy used by companies to hedge against the volatility of jet fuel prices.

The crude prices will soften in 2014 and 2015 and will trade in the range of $95 per barrel to $100 per barrel, compared to current trade at approximately $104 per barrel. This decline in the crude prices will decrease the acquisition cost of crude for the refineries, which in turn will reduce the selling price of jet fuel. Analysts expect refiners' acquisition cost to decrease by an average of 7.3% annually through 2015. Spirit has hedged its estimated consumption of 170 million gallons of fuel in the current year and will gain $9 million from its hedging strategy from the movement of crude oil prices.

IMF Crude Price Outlook (in $ per barrel)

2) C! apacity expansion
Recently, the company ordered 20 new A321 aircraft which will be delivered between 2015 and 2017. Additionally, it modified its previous order of 10 A320 aircrafts, scheduled for delivery in 2017 and 2018, changing it to A321. The A321 aircraft has 219 seats as compared to 178 seats in the A320. Spirit will increase its fleet strength by 20% in 2013, 13% in 2014, and 16% in 2015.

I can see the tailwinds from the air traffic in the U.S. that will increase gradually due to the improving economy. It will reach approximately 800 million passengers by 2016, up from 700 million passengers in 2012.

For the next few years, Spirit will focus on expanding its reach in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, which is currently its second largest destination in terms of passenger traffic. Last year, Spirit focused on its growth in the Western U.S. This expansion trend started in 2011, when the company began to explore new destinations in the U.S. outside its legacy Florida route network. The expansion in the Dallas-Fort Worth route will account for nearly 22% of Spirit's expansion in the current year. Further, Spirit recently made an announcement regarding the start of service between Dallas and Mexico. The passenger traffic in Mexico increased 6% in June this year on a year-over-year basis and will continue the momentum for the remainder of 2013. This is a step forward to capture the increasing traffic in these areas by offering lower fares.

3) A change in accounting

Unlike its competitors which are heavily funded by debt, Spirit has no debt on its balance sheet. This gives the company better financial leverage than its peers.

Presently, the majority of Spirit's lease arrangements are operating leases. Under this arrangement, the company doesn't show aircrafts taken on lease as assets on its balance sheet, but it accounts for the lease rentals in its income and expenditure account. In 2012, Spirit paid aircraft rentals of $144 million, which will increase to $175 million and $! 206 milli! on in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Under such circumstance, there is a possibility that the Spirit can change its accounting for further aircrafts leased. If it starts accounting under the finance lease method, it will lead to an increase of tangible fixed assets on its balance sheet, and the company will no longer charge lease rentals on its income and expenditure account.

By the current year end, Spirit will have 54 aircrafts which will increase to 61 in 2014. Correspondingly the lease rentals are also expected to increase to $175 million in the current year and $206 million in 2014 from $144 million in 2012. If the additional seven aircrafts scheduled for delivery in 2014 is accounted under finance lease method rather than operating lease, there can be a reduction of $31 million in its lease rentals. This will reduce the company's operating expenses and result in an increase of nearly 1.6% in its operating margin.

4) Opportunity from ancillary revenue growth

Spirit offers an unbundled ticket component to its passengers, which allows them to pay for the services they require. The extra service charges are ancillary to the base airfare and include charges for services like checked baggage, advance seat selection, and itinerary changes. These ancillary services accounted for 41% of the company's total revenue in 2012, which totaled $536 million.

Going forward, Spirit plans to continue to innovate new ancillary revenue opportunity and enhance existing offerings such as a call center, which will increase the number of travel packages sold directly to the passengers. This initiative will improve the company's revenue from ancillary services, which will contribute significantly to the company's ancillary services revenue generation of $680 million in the current year.

Valuation

Generally, an airline company is valued on the basis of its enterprise value to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and rental expenses, or EBITDAR, multiple, because the lea! se rental! s form a significant portion of the cost of operations for airlines. However, since Spirit's EPS is expected to grow at a higher rate (a CAGR of 25% through 2015), it is appropriate to apply an equal weight mix of the company's enterprise value and its earnings to arrive at the valuation.

To arrive at Spirit's intrinsic value, I have used the following figures:

Expected revenue of $1.68 billion for 2013

Average expected Gross Margin of approximately 17%

Depreciation of $40 million

Tax of $90 million

To arrive at EBITDAR, the lease rental of $175 million is added back to the gross profit. This gives EBITDAR of $462 million and with an enterprise value of $2.58 billion by the end of 2013 gives us an enterprise value to EBITDAR multiple of 5.58 times. With 72.53 million shares outstanding at the year's end, Spirit's EBITDAR per share comes to $6.37. Further, the company is expected to generate EPS of $2.10 in the current year and trade at a price to earning multiple of 20 times.

So, applying a 5.58 multiple to EBITDAR per share and a price to earning multiple of 20 times to the current year EPS, the company's stock should trade at $38.77.

= (6.37*5.58) *0.50 + (2.10*20) *0.50

= $38.77.

Assumptions:

1) I expect the company will not make any fresh issue of equity shares in the current year and the shares outstanding will remain at 72.53 million.

2) An equal weighted average is used to calculate the share price. This is because the company's earning is expected to rise proportionately with its enterprise value in the current year.

Stock price movement

SAVE Chart

SAVE data by YCharts

Since March 2013, the company's stock price has seen a consistent rise due to its future growth potential. The trend will to continue for the remainder of 2013. One thing the investors should keep in mind is that the co! mpany doe! s not have any long term debt and preference shares outstanding, which implies that all the earnings of the company are attributable to its equity shareholders. Also, due to a debt free balance sheet, the company will be able to raise fresh equity, without any restrictions, at a cheaper rate.

Note:

These factors account for an even higher multiple for valuing the company (which if taken into consideration can further increase the company's stock price).

On July 2, 2013, an aircraft of Spirit airlines avoided a collision with a skydiving plane in the skies over Michigan. The matter is under investigation with the Federal Aviation Administration, or the FAA. If Spirit is at fault, the incident could hurt passenger sentiment, which could affect immediate demand. Therefore, the company's stock price has some potential for volatility when the assessment by the FAA is complete. Though the company's stock may exhibit some volatility, investors shouldn't panic and should continue to hold their position in the stock, as this will just be short term volatility.

Conclusion

Spirit has a strong fundamental base that will drive its future growth potential. The expected decline in the crude oil prices will benefit Spirit, as its operating margins will improve. Further, the recent order placed by the company with the Airbus, its expansion in the Dallas Fort-Worth route, and the start of different routes highlights the company's future expansion plans and it is optimistic about its operations. These expansions coupled with the increasing opportunity from ancillary services will increase the company's overall revenue. Its debt free balance sheet gives it the best leverage position among its peers, which will also support the easy raising of funds for the company. Also, the huge cash balance gives the company flexibility to change its method of accounting for airplanes leased.

Taking into account the above mentioned factors, and increasing consumer spending in the U.S., I assume the com! pany's st! ock will see a further upwards trend in 2013 (though it may experience some volatility) and will trade in the range of $35- $40 for the remainder of 2013. Therefore, I recommend "buying" this stock with a target price of $39.

Best Medical Companies To Invest In Right Now

Americans pay a lot for health care. The latest information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, shows that around $6,815 per person is spent on various forms of health care, including hospital stays, physician care, skilled nursing, prescription drugs, and a host of other areas. Some pay considerably less than others, though. Here are the 7 states with the lowest annual per-capita health care costs in the U.S.

7. Colorado
High altitudes don't appear to correspond with high medical costs. Coloradans spend $5,994 per capita on health care -- 12% less than the amount paid by Americans as a whole.

6. Texas
Texans like to say that everything's bigger in Texas. One thing that's not bigger, though, is health care spending. The state's per-capita figure of $5,924 is 13% below the amount paid nationwide.

Hot Clean Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now

Thanks largely to the antics of former CEO Aubrey McClendon, Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) has been one of the most maligned names in the energy sector. McClendon leveraged the company's future with debt, intertwined his personal finances with the company's, and engineered a land-buying program that received significant amounts of bad press topped off with negative portrayal of the industry in Matt Damon's movie, "Promised Land." The result has been a nearly 40% slide in Chesapeake Energy stock over the past two years.

Natural gas on the rise
Despite the bad press, the overall position of the natural gas industry has never looked more promising. Companies ranging from Clean Energy Fuels (NASDAQ: CLNE  ) to Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A  ) are beginning to initiate programs that rely heavily on natural gas. In the case of Clean Energy, the company is undertaking a major push to create a corridor of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, filling stations across the country to allow trucks to carry freight on LNG power rather than diesel. This type of transition is likely to eventually trickle down to passenger vehicles, which currently are not fully viable as an LNG alternative. While Chesapeake Energy stock once benefited from the company's partial ownership of Clean Energy, that stake is likely to be sold to help meet debt obligations.

Why Immunomedics Shares Soared

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Immunomedics (NASDAQ: IMMU  ) , a biopharmaceutical company researching monoclonal, antibody-based products to treat cancer and other autoimmune disorders, jumped as much as 15% after providing a clinical update on its antibody-drug conjugate programs.

So what: Antibody-drug conjugates, or ADCs for short, attach a chemotherapy toxin to an antibody and essentially teach that antibody to recognize a protein expressed by the targeted cancer. When the antibody comes in contact with that specific protein, it releases the toxin, hopefully killing the cancer cell and leaving healthy cells alone.

Today, Immunomedics noted that two of its three ADCs -- IMMU-130 and IMMU-132 – delivered tumor shrinkage and some partial responses in early stage studies, especially in metastatic colorectal cancer and triple-negative breast cancer. IMMU-130 is being tested specifically on advanced colorectal cancer, while IMMU-132 is being tested on 13 different cancer types.

Now what: We're still in the top of the second inning of a nine-inning game here, but ADCs certainly appear to be the future of cancer therapy -- at least one path to treating it. Immunomedics still has a long road to climb as its two ADC peers are much further along in their development process. ImmunoGen (NASDAQ: IMGN  ) , for instance, already has an FDA-approved drug for late-stage HER2-positive breast cancer known as Kadcyla that utilizes the company's proprietary targeted-antibody payload technology (the same concept as ADCs with a different name) in combination with Roche's Herceptin. In trials, this combo extended median overall survival by 5.8 months over the placebo to 30.9 months. Something similar can be said for Seattle Genetics and its ADC pipeline.

The point is, I do see quite a lot of potential in Immunomedics, but you also need to keep your expectations in check.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Glenn]

TOT has a market capitalization of $130 billion. Its dividend yield last year of 5% is among the best in the industry. Current P/E ratio of 9.2 seems very attractive compared to the industry average of 12. The stock prices did not participate much in the recent bull market. While smaller sized competitors such as ConocoPhillips (COP), Marathon Oil Corporation (MRO) and Statoil ASA (STO) offered spectacular returns (ranging from 30% to 50%), Total’s return in 2010 was only 2%. One may find that the price will catch up with profits.

Top 10 Bank Stocks To Watch Right Now

It's been an up-and-down week for Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , but mostly down: Share prices for the superbank are net 2.79% in the red over the last five days, with less than two hours to go on the last day of trading. Thank general market negativity for that, but also uncertainty over what could be the bank's most crucial legal battle yet.

Waiting for Bernanke
Firstly, the world waits to see when Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke and his central-bank compatriots from Europe and Japan are going to turn off the money spigots that have spurred America's nascent economic recovery, kept Europe's recessions from turning into depressions, and offered a glimmer of hope that Japan will finally emerge from its decades-long doldrums.

Secondly, B of A investors are waiting to see what will come out of a trial ending today in a New York courtroom. At issue is a challenge to a 2011 settlement between B of A, AIG (NYSE: BAC  ) , and other big investors over mortgage-backed securities issued by the superbank's problem child, Countrywide Financial.

Wilshire Bancorp owes $62.2 million in federal bailout funds received through the Troubled Assets Relief Program, or TARP. The company raised $100 million in common equity during the second quarter, following an agreement with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and state regulators to bring main subsidiary Wilshire State Bank's Tier 1 leverage ratio up to at least 10%. The Bank subsidiary's Tier 1 leverage ratio was 13.24% as of Sept. 30.

The holding company reported third-quarter net income available to common shareholders of $10.2 million, or 14 cents a share, increasing from $2.1 million, or 4 cents a share, during the second quarter, and $5.0 million, or 14 cents a share, during the third quarter of 2010.

The main factor in the earnings improvement was a reduction in credit costs, with a third-quarter provision for loan losses of $2.5 million, declining from $10.3 million the previous quarter and $18.0 million a year earlier. A $5.7 million decline in loan loss reserves during the third quarter directly boosted earnings.

With the company continuing its aggressive reduction of its commercial real estate loan portfolio and its nonperforming loans, Wilshire Bancorp's total assets declined 17% from a year earlier. During the third quarter, the company sold $28.7 million in loans, most of which were nonperforming, for a gain of $1.7 million.

The annualized ratio of net charge-offs -- loan losses less recoveries -- to total loans was 0.46%, and with reserves covering 5.27% of total loans, the company appeared well-positioned for continued significant releases of reserves.

FIG Partners analyst Timothy Coffey on Oct. 28 reiterated his "Outperform" or "Buy" rating for Wilshire Bancorp, raising his 12-month price target to $4.50 from $3.80, also "estimating tangible book values of $3.43 in 2011, $4.21 in 2012 and $4.84 in 2013." The analyst said that he anticipated that "could start to reverse the DTA-Deferred Tax Asset valuation allowance over the coming quarters," and that "the improvement in the earnings power has resulted in losses below management's projections, which has increased the valuation allowance to $40 million." Coffey estimated that "company could have no tax expense or very limited expense in 2012 before a normalized expense returns in 2013."

The shares trade for 6.8 times the consensus 2012 earnings estimate of 50 cents, among analysts polled by FactSet, and just above their Sept. 30 tangible book value of $3.27, according to SNL Financial.

If you're looking for safety in a big-bank stock, your best bet is Wells Fargo (WFC). It's the biggest of those mentioned in this story (market capitalization: $193 billion), it is arguably the best-managed, and it has done best at staying out of trouble. Its stock, now $37.42, is closer to its pre-financial-meltdown high than any other company on this list. As a result, Wells is a bit more expensive than the other big-bank stocks, particularly in relation to future earnings growth, and that's why Oja isn't recommending it. The shares trade at 10 times estimated 2013 earnings of $3.65 per share, and analysts forecast long-term earnings growth of 10% a year. The stock yields 2.7%.

It makes more loans to home buyers and small-business owners than any other U.S. bank. And it's one of the most profitable banks, with a net profit margin of 18.1% -- better than that of most of its peers. That means that even in a slow-moving economy, the bank should hold up well. Wells, which reported record earnings in the second quarter, raised its dividend in 2011 and 2012. The stock yields 2.7% and trades at 9 times expected 2013 earnings.

The report adds that management is moving the bank to become "one of the most profitable banks in the industry over time," and it "[encourages] investors to buy the stock at current levels and ahead of an expected 15-20% ROE and the valuation improvement that should coincide with this level of profitability."
