Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Holly LaFon]

At this point I would like to circle back to a subject we are perhaps most often asked about, and that is why do we continue to hold such a concentrated position (nearly 32%) in our three largest holdings? First of all, it is important to note that over the past two year s we have actually reduced our holdings in all three stocks. Fortunately for our shareholders long - term price appreciation, particularly in Universal Health Services, Inc. and Precision Castparts Corp., has been exceptionally strong (in the case of Universal Health Services, Inc., which was purchased in 1999 and 2000 at an average cost per share of $9.41 and ha d increased to a price per share of $81.26 at the end of 2013, and Precision Castparts Corp. which was bought in 2000 at a n average cost per share of $9.82 and ha d increased to a price per share of $26 9. 3 0 at the end of 2013). In our view these two companies remain in the " sweet spot " of two compelling long - term investment opportunities. In the case of Universal Health Services, Inc., the company i s likely to be one of the prime beneficiaries of expanding health care insurance coverage dictated by the Affordable Care Act * ** ( " Obama - care " ). Unique to Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHT) is its position in mental health services which account s for three - q uarters of its earnings before deductions for interest expense, taxes, depreciation and amortization . Precision Castparts Corp. (PCP) is a prime component supplier to the commercial aircraft manufacturers. Indicative of the attractiveness of this business was The Boeing Company ' s recent announcement that its year - end backlog was 5,080 planes compared to the 648 jets delivered in 2013. By the same token, Airbus ' (a subsidiary of Airbus Group NV) backlog at the end of November was 5,400 versus the 562 planes del ivered in the first eleven months of the year.

CEO Gaffe of the Week: Abercrombie & Fitch

Last year, I introduced a weekly series called "CEO Gaffe of the Week." Having come across more than a handful of questionable executive decisions when compiling my list of the worst CEOs of 2011, I thought it could be a learning experience for all of us if I pointed out apparent gaffes as they occur. Trusting your investments begins with trusting the leadership at the top -- and with leaders like these on your side, sometimes you don't need enemies!

This week, we'll take a look at Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF  ) CEO Mike Jeffries and examine why it's important to think before opening your mouth.

The dunce cap
Make no mistake about it; the retail environment is highly competitive. It's not uncommon for apparel retailers to experience peaks and troughs concurrent with consumer spending, but it's even tougher for teen retailers like Abercrombie that rely on teen spending (and their parents' credit cards) to drive their business.

Teens are a fickle group of shoppers because fashion can change in a heartbeat and many still don't truly understand "value" when it comes to making a purchase. Aeropostale (NYSE: ARO  ) , for instance, excelled last decade by relying on deep discounts to drive quick turnover of its products. While these discounts hurt its margins, the sheer volume it was moving made up for its lower margins. Lately, though, its styles have failed to hit home with teens, causing its inventory levels to build and its growth to be sluggish.

Similarly, American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO  ) has struggled to connect with the younger generation with its direct-to-consumer business, lagging behind many of its peers despite hitting a nice mid-tier pricing niche. Not surprisingly, its forecast in March disappointed existing shareholders.

Then there's Abercrombie & Fitch, whose exposure to a troubled European market has hurt its bottom line and slowed its expansion. Domestically, A&F has benefited from the attrition caused by the closure of numerous Pacific Sunwear (NASDAQ: PSUN  ) locations as the struggling teen apparel retailer attempts to rein in expenses, and even from the struggles of J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP  ) , whose sale-on, sale-off pricing strategy drove customers out of its stores and to competitors like Abercrombie. But even this hasn't been enough to keep A&F from closing stores in an effort to control costs. In fact, Abercrombie's EPS forecast for the upcoming year was $0.23 below Wall Street's estimates at the midpoint, even with the cost savings from closing 40 to 50 projected stores this year.

Top 10 Gas Companies To Invest In 2015

To the corner, Mr. Jeffries
You might say that Abercrombie's turnaround is still in a fragile state, so it certainly couldn't afford any goof-ups, especially from its CEO, Mike Jeffries. However, in recent weeks an interview has resurfaced that Mike Jeffries did with news website Salon in 2006, in which he was quoted as saying:

In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive All-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don't belong [in our clothes], and they can't belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.

And that's how you anger an entire nation in just a matter of a few sentences! The resurfacing of this interview proves that a public figure like Jeffries can't simply escape what's been previously disseminated via social media, and that CEOs really need to watch what they say. In response to his comments' reemergence, those most angered by Jeffries' message are ensuring that homeless people, for instance, are receiving A&F clothing donated by people infuriated with the CEO's comments.

Jeffries has since apologized for his comments seven years ago and claims that Abercrombie is doing nothing more than marketing to a specific group of individuals similar to the strategy of many other apparel retailers. Jeffries also claims that discrimination of any form would be opposed by the company. Yet, seven years after Jeffries' comments, we still see that men can get XL and XXL sizes in A&F stores, yet women aren't able to get anything in XL or XXL sizes.

The epidemic of foot-in-mouth syndrome has claimed another victim in Mike Jeffries and earned him the title of "worst human in retail" on many social networking sites. It's a title that'd be hard to argue against.

Do you have a CEO you'd like to nominate for this dubious honor? Shoot me an email and a one- or two-sentence description of why your choice deserves next week's nomination, and you just may see your suggestion in the spotlight.

Will this retailer's turnaround ever take shape?

Best Integrated Utility Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Worries about emerging markets have weighed on equities again Friday, and those same worries are tamping down prices for crude oil and natural gas. WTI crude is down about 0.5% at midday following a jump Thursday of about 0.8%.

Natural gas futures are faring even worse. Gas prices rose sharply on Wednesday only to tumble more than 8% Thursdayto close at about $5.01 per thousand cubic feet. The price fell another 5% Friday to around $4.76.

Wednesday 10% jump in gas prices was likely due more to the expiration of the February futures contract than to expected demand for natural gas. The weather forecast for the next 10 days indicates warmer temperatures in heavily populated parts of the country.

The slowdown in demand from emerging markets comes as developing markets are faced with a decision on whether to raise interest rates in order to protect their currencies. Rising rates in developing markets, including China, will slow growth it what has been the fastest growing segment of the global economy and is likely to curb demand for oil and other commodities.

Perrigo (PRGO) is a global manufacturer of over-the-counter (OTC) store brand and generic prescription pharmaceuticals, infant formulas, nutritional products and active pharma ingredients. The company is the dominant player in the OTC drug market with the largest distribution network and broadest range of product offerings. The OTC store brands have increased their market share by about 1-2% annually at the expense of national name product given their superior value proposition to both the consumer and retailers. Perrigo has numerous growth drivers over the next few years including the continued penetration of OTC store brands and introduction of new product categories. The stock sells at a reasonable valuation, in our opinion, given the company's strong management team, financial returns and long-term growth prospects.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) , the S&P 500 Index (SPX) , and the Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP) all finished slightly lower last week, after all three hit their highs for 2013 on Dec. 31. The New Year Eve surge capped the best year for the S&P 500 and Dow average since the 1990. The last leg of that rally came after the Fed finally made the move that had obsessed financial markets for the past year: It said it would start reducing asset purchases in January. Whether investors felt the tapering was slight ($10 billion) or because the Fed stressed it was committed to keep rates low, stocks kept on their rally hats. The S&P 500 rose by about 4% before year end following the Dec. 18 Fed decision.

Best Integrated Utility Stocks To Invest In Right Now: United States Brent Oil Fund LP (BNO)

United States Brent Oil Fund, LP (USBO) is a commodity pool. USBO is focused on issuing units that may be purchased and sold on the NYSE Arca, Inc. The investment portfolio of USBO will consist primarily of investments in futures contracts for crude oil, heating oil, gasoline, natural gas and other petroleum-based fuels that are traded on the ICE Futures, New York Mercantile Exchange (the NYMEX) or other United States and foreign exchanges (collectively, Futures Contracts). USBO may also take positions in other crude oil-related investments, such as cash-settled options on Futures Contracts, forward contracts for oil, cleared swap contracts and non-exchange traded (over-the-counter) transactions that are based on the price of crude oil, other petroleum-based fuels, Futures Contracts and indices based on the foregoing (collectively, Other Crude Oil-Related Investments).

Advisors' Opinion:

As I have noted before, investors can play this spread by using two exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that are already part of the Energy AdvantagePortfolio: PowerShares DB Energy Fund (NYSE Arca: DBE) and the United States Brent Oil Fund (NYSE Arca: BNO).

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    How to invest
If those trends persist, then it could eventually solve the problem that United States Oil Fund has had in underperforming the spot price of crude. Given Brent's stronger backwardation trend, United States Brent Oil Fund (NYSEMKT: BNO  ) might be the better oil ETF to choose.

Best Integrated Utility Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Whitecap Resources Inc (SPGYF.PK)

In October 2013, the Company announced that it has completed the acquisition of a Cardium light oil property and a working interest consolidation of its Eagle Lake Viking unit. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Caiman Valores]

The recent surge in oil prices has renewed investor interest in the small-cap oil and gas E&P sector. One company that stands out for all the right reasons is Canadian domiciled small-cap, Whitecap Resources (SPGYF.PK). Since 2009 the company has unlocked considerable value for investors through a range of acquisitions as well as development and exploration projects. This has seen its share price surge in value to be up by almost 53% over the last year alone. However, it is clear that the market has yet to fully recognize the true value of Whitecap and there is still considerable upside potential of over 30% for investors. This along with Whitecap's dividend growth strategy makes it a particularly appealing deep-value investment in the oil and gas E&P sector.

Dominik Pabis/Getty Images Do you want to buy clothes that are made in America? And are you willing to pay what it costs to help bring manufacturing jobs back to America -- and be once again able to buy quality goods that will last, in return for your money? Words and Actions Most Americans answer yes to the first question -- initially, at least. A New York Times poll last year found 46 percent of shoppers saying they would happily pay the same price -- or even a bit of a premium -- to own clothing made in America, as opposed to clothing made in China, Vietnam or another foreign country. Yet according to American-made apparel manufacturer Buck Mason, less than 3 percent of clothing is made in America. Why is this? Many products made in America sell for prices far higher than what similar products made elsewhere cost. What's more, even if you are willing to pay the premium for quality (the Times poll noted that 56 percent of Americans say American-made clothing is of higher quality than imports), Buck Mason laments: "it is virtually impossible to go to a mall anywhere, and find a high-quality, American-made garment" today. So there are really two problems for shoppers looking to "buy American" today. First, you can't find such goods to buy. Second, if you do find them, they cost too much. American Apparel One company trying to fix the first problem is Los Angeles-based American Apparel (APP). A vertically integrated clothing company (meaning it owns and operates its own retail stores, selling its own clothing), American Apparel makes its clothing in the U.S. and sells it here and abroad. Despite charging prices that can be twice the cost of imports, however, American Apparel has struggled to earn a profit. The company ran into difficulties with its financial auditor in 2010 and suffered through a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation as a result. Sales growth has been anemic; American Apparel is losing money; and at last report, the company wa

Alamy For years -- ever since the Great Recession ended -- pundits have been pontificating about a strange trend in corporate America. Despite earning record profits, and having the ability to borrow cash easily, companies were refusing to spend. Like Scrooge in his office, they were raking in profits ... and then sitting on them, refusing to put the money to work to grow the American economy. Or so the story went. But was it true? it true? It turns out that this real story is a bit more complicated; and you'll be surprised where a lot of that cash came from ... and what it needs to be spent on. A Kernel of Truth Every complex tale grows from a kernel of truth, of course, and this one actually grows out of two such kernels. It's true that American corporations are fabulously profitable today. According to the Department of Commerce, profit margins at U.S. companies in 2013 were regularly hitting levels of 9.3 percentage points -- more than 57 percent higher than average over the past 60 years. Also true is that these profits, in turn, yielded a lot of cash for the corporations earning them. From 2006 through mid-2013, total cash reserves at U.S. nonfinancial companies (i.e., everything but banks) nearly doubled, rising from $820 billion to $1.48 trillion, an 81 percent increase. Credit ratings company Moody's (MCO) recently estimated that cash levels at the end of 2013 probably hit $1.5 trillion.

Best Transportation Stocks To Own For 2014

General Motors said on Friday that it will pay the maximum $35 million fine to the U.S. Department of Transportation for delays in recalling 2003-2011 small cars with a potentially deadly ignition switch defect.

The fine is part of a consent agreement with the DOT to settle its "timeliness" inquiry into whether GM notified the government within the required five business days after finding a safety defect. GM admits in the agreement that it did not. DOT says GM also agreed to make "significant and wide-ranging internal changes" in how it monitors safety issues.

In addition, GM agreed to give the DOT's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration "full access to the results of GM's internal investigation into this recall."

That's a big concession by GM. CEO Mary Barra told congressional committees in April that she wouldn't give them the full report but would hand over the parts directly related to safety. Anton "Tony" Valukas, chairman of the Chicago-based law firm Jenner & Block and a former U.S. attorney, is conducting GM's internal probe.

Companies with maritime resources benefit from this trend, as well as growth in exports. Three such companies that are worth a look are:

These companies won't be the only winners, but they are a good place to start your research.

China announced it is shooting for 7.5% GDP for 2014. At the sound of that target, DryShips (NASDAQ: DRYS  ) andDiana Shipping (NYSE: DSX  ) are likely celebrating. China is the primary country these days responsible for rising market rates for dry shipping, but something in the announcement may warrant a bit of caution.

From the way the stock of DryShips (NASDAQ: DRYS  ) is trading lately, you might think all of its ships have hit an iceberg. With the stock falling further and further to new 52-week lows, it may be tempting to try to pick a bottom and ride it back up. However, as cheap as DryShips may look now, here are three reasons it may get even cheaper.

Microsoft's "Trojan Horse"

Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) latest attack on Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) through a trade group is being called a "Trojan horse." The practice is becoming more commonplace for Mr. Softy, and it's joined in this case by some big names, including Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) and Oracle (NYSE: ORCL  ) . While the practice is technically within the rules, it begs the question of whether regulation is really to become a new offensive weapon of competition in Europe.

In the below video, Fool contributor Doug Ehrman discusses the actions taken by Microsoft and looks at both the merits and potential fallout of this type of practice.

It's been a frustrating path for Microsoft investors, who've watched the company fail to capitalize on the incredible growth in mobile over the past decade. However, with the release of its own tablet, along with the widely anticipated Windows 8 operating system, the company is looking to make a splash in this booming market. In this brand-new premium report on Microsoft, our analyst explains that while the opportunity is huge, the challenges are many. Why IBM Is the Real Threat to Intel's Server Dominance

Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) has managed to build a near-monopoly in the server chip market during the past few years. Competitor AMD has largely become irrelevant, claiming a low-single digit share at best, and Intel's x86 architecture has become the de facto standard in the server world.

International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM  ) , which recently sold its x86 server business to Lenovo, sells servers and mainframes built around its POWER architecture. While many industries are dependent on IBM's mainframes, Intel's x86 architecture has become the king of the data center.

Intel's dominance has allowed the company to extract outrageous profits from its data center segment, and companies like Google, which buys a tremendous number of server chips each year, have little choice but to pay whatever Intel charges for its chips. IBM took the first step toward shifting the balance of power last year with the formation of the OpenPOWER Foundation, a consortium of companies working to make the POWER architecture a viable alternative to Intel's products. With companies like Google, NVIDIA, and Samsung backing the effort, OpenPOWER represents a real threat to Intel's lucrative server business.

The plan to take down Intel
IBM is licensing its new POWER8 architecture, as well as all previous versions, to members of the OpenPOWER Foundation. Companies will be able to design their own POWER8 chips, and have them manufactured at the foundry of their choice, as well as design other server components that will tightly integrate with the POWER8 processor.

IBM recently announced the first servers under the OpenPOWER initiative, which include a GPU accelerator card from NVIDIA, and run the Ubuntu Linux operating system. Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is also a member of the OpenPOWER Foundation.

IBM's POWER8 chips are extremely powerful, and the company claims that the ability of the chips to tightly integrate with coprocessors from NVIDIA and other companies give POWER8 servers the ability to analyze certain Big Data workloads up to 1,000 times faster than comparable x86 systems. The advantage is much smaller when considering just the processors themselves, but IBM's POWER8 chips are still more powerful than Intel's offerings on a per-core basis.

It will take more than just a powerful processor to challenge Intel; but with support from big companies like Google, which would likely benefit if it could replace Intel chips in its data centers, POWER8 has a real chance of ending Intel's server dominance.

Intel's outrageous profits
Since 2007, the average selling price of Intel's server chips has risen by 47%, from $429 to $629. This is the opposite of what typically happens in other chip markets, where there's at least some competition. It's obvious why Google is supporting an alternative to Intel's server chips.

The rising price of Intel's server chips has allowed the company to achieve margins in its data center business that are truly extraordinary. During fiscal 2013, Intel managed an operating margin of 46% in its data center segment, compared to only 36% in the company's PC segment. This enormous operating margin represents an opportunity for IBM, and if POWER8 servers can offer better value to enterprise customers, Intel may not be able to maintain this level of profitability in the long run.

Even if Intel doesn't lose very much market share, the competition may force the company to lower prices, and that would negatively affect the company's bottom line. While Intel derives more than twice the operating income from its PC segment as it does from its data center segment, server chips represent a larger growth opportunity compared to the stagnating PC market.

Final thoughts
It's difficult to predict whether IBM and its partners will be able to win a significant amount of market share from Intel. The level of support behind the OpenPOWER Foundation leads me to believe that IBM has a real chance at ending Intel's server chip monopoly. If that happens, the days of 46% operating margins for Intel's server business could be coming to an end.

Market Wrap: Stocks End a Volatile Week with a Surge

Financial Markets Wall Street Federal Reserve AP/Richard Drew NEW YORK -- Good economic and corporate news helped the stock market stage a rebound at the end of a turbulent week of trading. Nike jumped after turning in higher profits, leading the Dow Jones industrial average higher. The Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC), the benchmark for most mutual funds, still lost 1.4 percent for the week. The biggest drop came Thursday, the worst day for the stock market since July 31. A steep drop one day is often followed by gains the next as investors hunt for beaten-down stocks. "After yesterday, it's only normal to get a little bit back because people tend to buy on the dips," said Jason Pride, director of investment strategy at Glenmede Trust. The Dow (^DJI) surged 167.35 points, or 1 percent, to close at 17,113.15 on Friday. The S&P 500 index rose 16.86 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,982.85 and the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) climbed 45.45 points, or 1 percent, to 4,512.19. The day started with good news. The government reported that the U.S. economy expanded at an annual rate of 4.6 percent in the spring, the fastest pace in more than two years. That was followed by a strong reading of consumer sentiment this month. Nike (NKE) jumped 12 percent after reporting that solid sales and lower taxes helped drive its quarterly profit up 23 percent. Both its earnings and revenue beat Wall Street's estimates. Nike's stock gained $9.75 to $89.50, the largest gain among the 30 big companies in the Dow. It was a roller coaster of a week. The Dow swung more than 100 points on all five days. The turbulence broke a long period in which the stock market rarely made a big move. Many investment strategists said investors should get used to it. The sudden turbulence comes as investors speculate over the Federal Reserve's next steps. Economists expect the Fed to raise its benchmark short-term interest rate next year, but nobody is sure exactly when. The Fed hasn't raised that rate since June 2006. "We're getting closer and closer to the Fed's first rate hike," said Russ Koesterich, global chief investment strategist at the money manager BlackRock. "All that liquidity that the Fed created curbed volatility. As that liquidity recedes, volatility rises back to normal. We're just starting to get a taste of what normal is like." Pride said he expects the market to resume its climb as the economy improves. "I think we'll continue to grind higher because the economic momentum is still there," he said. Among other companies in the news, Janus's stock soared 43 percent following news that famed bond-fund manager Bill Gross, a founder of bond giant Pimco, is leaving to join the firm. Janus said Gross, who ran the world's largest bond fund, starts work next Monday. Janus jumped $4.78 to $15.89. An investment fund with a stake in Yahoo sent a letter to Yahoo's CEO urging the company to consider merging with AOL (AOL). Jeffrey Smith, who heads Starboard Value, wrote that a deal could save as much as $1 billion and create a more competitive company. Yahoo (YHOO) climbed $1.71, or 4 percent, to $40.66. The euro continued to slide against the dollar, dipping to $1.268. It has lost more than 3 percent against the dollar this month. The report on economic growth weighed on U.S. government bond prices, nudging yields up. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note climbed to 2.53 percent from 2.50 percent late Thursday. In commodity trading, precious and industrial metals made slight moves. The price of gold fell $6.50 to settle at $1,215.40 an ounce. Silver slipped 10 cents to $17.54 an ounce. Copper was unchanged at $3.03 a pound. The price of oil increased on expectations of rising demand in the U.S., where economic growth appears to be picking up steam. Benchmark U.S. crude rose $1.01 to close at $93.54 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, a benchmark for international oils used by many U.S. refineries, remained unchanged at $97.00 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London. In other energy trading on the NYMEX: Wholesale gasoline fell 5.6 cents to close at $2.662 a gallon. Heating oil added 0.5 cent to close at $2.701 a gallon. Natural gas rose 1.3 cents to close at $3.984 per 1,000 cubic feet

Top 10 Cheapest Companies To Buy For 2014

Lately, there's been a lot of talk about drones and their place in safeguarding America. And while there's still controversy surrounding their use, there's no denying that drones are an effective weapon of war -- both for spying, er "observation," and taking out enemy targets. They are so effective, in fact, that a new frontier is opening up to drone warfare -- namely, the sea. For both Raytheon (NYSE: RTN  ) and SAIC (NYSE: SAI  ) , this is good news.

Unmanned to the rescue
Right now there are an estimated 600 submarines from 43 countries that the Navy is responsible for tracking, according to Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA. Understandably, this isn't the cheapest venture for the Navy, but because of the potential security threat these subs pose, it's essential. Consequently, DARPA, along with Raytheon and SAIC, have teamed up to develop a cost-effective solution -- the Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vehicle, or ACTUV.

Proprietary Pump Technology

The HeartWare System is full-output centrifugal pump designed to be implanted in the chest, directly adjacent to the heart. At the core of the Company technology platform is its hybrid system for suspending the impeller, which is the only moving part within the pump. The impeller is suspended within the pump housing by the opposing forces of passive magnets and hydrodynamic thrust generated by the pump impeller, which circulates a cushion of

blood. Once power is applied to the device and the impeller begins to rotate, there are no points of mechanical contact within the pump, thus providing a completely wearless pumping system.

The HeartWare System

The HeartWare System consists of the HVAD Pump, a small, permanently implantable VAD, patient accessories and surgical tools. The HVAD Pump is capable of generating up to 10 liters of blood flow per minute. With a displaced v! olume of only 50 cubic centimeters and a mass of 140 grams, the HVAD Pump is the only full-output pump implantable in the pericardial space, directly adjacent to the heart. It is also the only pump designed to be implanted above the diaphragm in all eligible patients.

For example: Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund wrote in a research note back in November that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) is generating $2 billion per year in revenue from Android patent royalties and heestimates that this revenue has a 95% margin. However, there are risks associated with investing in stocks that invest in patents because a bi-partisan bill called the Innovation Act (H.R. 3309) isworking its way through Congress to try and reign in the activities of so-called"patent trolls" or rather companies that buy or license patents from others.

An example here is Bio Reference Lab (BRLI). This is a company with a simple business, strong balance sheet and the Predictability Rank of 5-Star. At the price of $19, BRLI was in the top of the Buffett-Munger Screener. But the stock price quickly dropped to below $12 in November 2011. At that point, the company announced a share buyback. The CEO, CFO and COO also bought shares in December at $14 a share. Since then the stock price has doubled.

But if you can definitely hold a company through a tough market that lasts a few years then you can look for a wonderful business to buy and hold at any time. In any market. I found some lovely businesses around the time of the 2000 market peak. They just weren big caps, dot coms, etc. They were smaller more mundane businesses. In at least one case Bio-Reference Labs (BRLI) I made some money (it seemed like a scary big amount at the time) holding the stock for about 2 years but I woulde made a whole lot more if I had just held that one stock through till today. And even now BRLI seems a fine stock to keep holding. So, you see I coulde saved myself a lot of trouble by holding something for more than 10 years. And it wouldn have hurt my performance at all. In fact, BRLI has beaten the market by a lot for a very long time. And, yes, the price I paid for BRLI happens to be the most I ever paid for a stock relative to its record earnings. So, I paid a very high price for a value investor like me for a stock that promptly went on to return around 20% a year for the next 10 years and is now back at almost the exact same P/E ratio where I first bought it.

Its been a rather eventful week for news from the marijuana sector and small cap marijuana stocks like GW Pharmaceuticals PLC (NASDAQ: GWPH), Tranzbyte Corp (OTCMKTS: ERBB) and Growlife Inc (OTCMKTS: PHOT) as one of these stocks gets endorsed by Morgan Stanley while another appears on CNBCmore signs of legitimacy for an investmentsector that full of pumps, dumps and other unsavory types of activities. Just consider the following small cap marijuana stock or pot industry news:

The SEC has halted trading of small cap marijuana stock Growlife Inc (OTCMKTS: PHOT) after a relatively brief trading halt forAdvanced Cannabis Solutions, Inc (OTCMKTS: CANN), but Tranzbyte Corp (OTCMKTS: ERBB), Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS) and Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA) are still very much alive. However and as I have noted (repeatedly)in the past (see here), Medical Marijuana Inc has aformer CEO who has been indicted for a multi-state mortgage fraud scam/ponzi scheme while Medbox Inc (OTCMKTS: MDBX) is another marijuana stock with some ssuesthat were summed up nicely in a Southern Investigative Reporting Foundation article cleverly entitled: Tinkerer, Lawyer, Hustler, Lies: One Man Path to a Dope Fortune. Obviously, investing in marijuana stocks is not for conservative. Nevertheless, there isstill plenty of good or bad news for investors in the marijuana sector to inhale, including the following:
