Best Long Term Companies To Invest In Right Now: Clovis Oncology Inc (CLVS)

Clovis Oncology, Inc. (Clovis) incorporated on April 20, 2009, is a Development-stage Company. The Company is a Biopharmaceutical Company. The Company focuses on acquiring, developing and commercializing anti-cancer agents in the United States, Europe and additional international markets. The Company also focuses on the treatment of specific subsets of cancer populations. During the year ended December 31, 2010, the Company was in the process of developing three product candidates for which it holds global marketing rights: CO-101, a lipid-conjugated form of the anti-cancer drug gemcitabine; CO-1686, an oral epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutant-selective inhibitor and CO-338, a poly ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate)-ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitor. Effective November 19, 2013, Clovis Oncology Inc acquired the entire share capital of Ethical Oncology Science SpA.

CO-101 - a Lipid-Conjugated Form of the Anti-Cancer Drug Gemcitabine

CO-101 is designed to treat patients with pancreatic cancer whose tumors express low amounts of a membrane transporter protein on the surface of the cancer cell known as hENT1 and are thus expected to be resistant to standard gemcitabine-based therapy. Based on the published results of multiple studies assessing the correlation of hENT1 expression to survival outcomes in pancreatic cancer patients treated with gemcitabine, the Company estimates that approximately 40% to 50% of pancreatic patients express low levels of hENT1, and thus derive little or no benefit from gemcitabine therapy. CO-101 is in an international, randomized and controlled 360-patient study for the first-line treatment of metastatic pancreatic cancer. This open-label study compares CO-101 to gemcitabine as a first-line therapy in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer. Clovis is partnered with Ventana Medical Systems for the development and commercialization of a companion diagnostic for the assessment of hENT1 levels.

CO-1686-an Oral EGFR Mutant-Selective ! Inhibitor

CO-1686 is an orally available, small molecule covalent inhibitor of the cancer-causing mutant forms of EGFR for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). CO-1686 targets both the initial activating EGFR mutations as well as the primary resistance mutation, T790M, it treats both first- and second-line NSCLC patients with EGFR mutations. Such initiating activating mutations occur in approximately 10% to 15% of NSCLC cases in Caucasian patients and approximately 30% to 35% of NSCLC cases in East Asian patients. Following treatment with approved NSCLC therapies, Tarceva (erlotinib) or Iressa (gefitinib), both known as tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), approximately half of these patients develop the T790M mutation.

The Company focuses on the development of CO-1686 as both a second-line therapy for EGFR-mutated NSCLC patients who become resistant to TKIs due to the emergence of the T790M secondary mutation and as a first-line treatment for EGFR-mutated NSCLC. Clovis is partnered with Roche Molecular Systems for the development and commercialization of a companion diagnostic for identification of EGFR mutations.

CO-338-a PARP Inhibitor

CO-338 is a small molecule PARP inhibitor that the Company focuses to develop as both monotherapy and in combination with chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of selected cancer patients. CO-338 is in a Phase I clinical trial to determine the maximum tolerated dose of oral CO-338 that can be combined with intravenous, or IV, platinum chemotherapy in the treatment of solid tumors. This program is supplemented by two ongoing investigator-initiated trials, using the IV formulation of CO-338: a Phase I/II study in germ-line BRCA mutant breast and ovarian cancer and a Phase II study in the adjuvant treatment of germ-line BRCA mutant and triple-negative breast cancer. The Company also focuses on initiating a Phase I monotherapy study of the oral formulation, to determine an appropriate dose and schedule.!

The Company competes with Eli Lilly, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, APP Pharmaceuticals, AB Science SA, Amgen Inc., Astellas Pharma, BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Celgene Corporation, Immunomedics, Inc., Lorus Therapeutics, Threshold Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Boehringer Ingelheim, Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis, Astra Zeneca, Abbott, Merck, Eisai, Cephalon and Biomarin.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

Cancer drug investors who have been disappointed in recent results from shares of Clovis Oncology Inc. (NASDAQ:CLVS) or Nuvilex Inc. (OTCMKTS:NVLX) lately may want to take a look at ZIOPHARM Oncology Inc. (NASDAQ:ZIOP) as a replacement for either of those first two stocks. CLVS is down about 16% for the week on a less-than-flattering write-up in a Bloomberg publication, and NVLX has moved under a pair of key moving averages this week because, well, for no specific reason, but broadly because the recent wave of compelling news is already losing its potency, with most of that upside already being priced into shares (and then some) before it became official.

It binds to beta-amyloid deposits in the brain that can then be imaged in positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Amyloid plaque pathology is a required feature of AD and the presence of amyloid pathology is a supportive feature for diagnosis of probable AD. Patients who are negative for amyloid pathology do not have AD. AZD4694 has been studied in several clinical trials. Clinical studies through Phase IIa have included more than 80 patients to date, both suspected AD patients and healthy volunteers. No significant adverse events have been observed. Results suggest that AZD4694 has the ability to image patients quickly and safely with high sensitivity.

RadioImmunoGuided Surgery

Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB  ) slumped 7.4% after Citigroup downgraded the stock from a buy to a hold. No, It’s Not a Good Time to Buy Oil Stocks

Energy stocks are, by far, the worst performing sector in the S&P 500 so far this year. That doesn’t make them a buy, however. Mizuho’s Carmine Grigoli and Ujjal Basu Roy explain:

Reuters

The massive sell-off in oil stocks has investors wondering if it is a good time to buy. Indeed, some pundits are recommending that investors increase energy holdings. We disagree and maintain our underweight in energy stocks. Simply, we expect a protracted downturn in oil prices, big cuts in earnings forecasts and stock prices are not cheap enough to encourage us to look beyond existing problems and anticipate better times ahead…

Without a sustained turnaround in crude oil prices, energy stocks could remain under pressure, in our view. Our research shows that risk of earnings disappointment is high as analysts' 2015 profit forecasts are factoring in a sizable recovery in WTI crude to roughly $90 a barrel. Based on current 2015 earnings forecast, the energy sector trades at P/E multiple of 14.3 times compared to P/E for the S&P 500 of 15.6, a relative high valuation given the uncertain and historical relationships.

Still, explorers seem relatively optimistic about their plans, Grigoli and Roy note:

According to ConocoPhillips (COP), 80% of U.S. shale oil could be produced profitably at oil prices around $40-80 while the CEO of Occidental Petroleum (OXY) has stated that much of oil production in the U.S. is viable at $753. Some companies such as Anadarko Petroleum (APC) have emphasized that recent developments in the commodity markets were not going to have much impact on its exploration plans. Others such as Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) have stated that the company could increase production by 16%- 21% through 2016 at oil prices in the range of $70-80 while EOG Resources (EOG) has maintained that it was going to post strong double-digit gains in oil production going forward despite the low price environment. Meanwhile, Chesapeake Energy (CHK) raised its production guidance for this year and noted that despite lower oil prices, declining production costs have enabled it to raise its production this year.

Top 10 Logistics Stocks To Buy For 2015

Smaller producers appear to agree, with Whiting Petroleum (WLL) noting that its production growth would be unchanged at oil prices of around $75 while an average oil price in the low $80s would not affect Energen's (EGN) production plans.

Grigoli and Roy recommend increasing positions in Consumer Discretionary companies, which have outperformed the S&P 500 by an average of 8.3 percentage points during past oil slides. The Consumer Staples sector, meanwhile, has outperformed by 4.2 points. “Energy-related consumption boosts have historically translated into superior performance of consumer stocks,” they say.

Investors don’t seem to mind scooping up energy stocks today, however. ConocoPhillips has gained 0.7% to $71.90 at 3:38 p.m., while Occidental Petroleum has risen 1.1% to $86.86, Anadarko has advanced 0.9% to $89.77, Pioneer Natural Resources has jumped 1.4% to $167.42 and EOG Resources is up 1.6% at $97.84.

Indian startup funding up 261%

snapdeal softbank ceo SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son is an investor in India's Alibaba: SnapDeal. NEW YORK (CNNMoney) What will be the next Alibaba?

Look to India -- investors are.

In fact, venture capital funding to Indian startups is up 261% from 2013, totaling $3.86 billion to date, according to PrivCo.

"If you look at India's growth and demographic, you can see that the next hot tech market after China is India," said PrivCo senior analyst Matt Turlip.

As in China, Indian e-commerce is especially hot.

Flipkart Online Services -- an Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) and Alibaba (BABA, Tech30)-like marketplace -- received $1 billion in funding in July.

"That's one of the best-funded startups in the world -- not just in India," said Turlip.

Flipkart rival SnapDeal also captured $653 million in October, for a total of $1 billion just this year.

SoftBank, the Japanese VC firm that was an early investor in Alibaba, has been funneling money into the Indian marketplace. In the last couple months, it invested $800 million in SnapDeal and Olacabs (the Uber of India). It also took a 36.5% stake in ScoopWhoop (India's Buzzfeed).

Tinder's popularity grows in India   Tinder's popularity grows in India

Also actively investing are major VC firms Sequoia Capital (known for early-stage investments Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL, Tech30)) and Accel Partners (an early investor in Facebook (FB, Tech30)).

Investors and entrepreneurs are smart to capitalize on the Indian market.

"500 million people will be coming online over the next three to four years on inexpensive smartphones," said Vivek Wadhwa, an Indian-American a! cademic and entrepreneur. "This will create an Internet revolution that will make our dot-com boom seem lame."

10 Best Railroad Stocks To Own For 2015

These soon-to-be connected consumers are also young -- making them an ideal e-commerce target.

By 2050, India is expected to be the most populated country with the largest economy, according to Pew. Half of its 1.25 billion residents are currently under the age of 25 -- and by 2020, it's set to become the world's youngest country with an average age of 29.

Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) has tuned into this. This month, the company announced plans to bring free Internet access to India with three data centers throughout the country. CEO Satya Nadella said the company sees a $2 trillion opportunity in the Indian market.

According to Sharad Sharma, an angel investor based in Bengaluru, India, the majority of India's startup talent is coming from the country's multinational R&D centers like Google, HP (HPQ, Tech30) and Cisco (CSCO, Tech30).

As cloud-based solutions have grown, the need for these IT hubs has slowed. This has many Indian entrepreneurs leaving the corporate world and launching startups.

"Employees are starting to feel stagnation as parent companies slow down," said Sharma. "Essentially, these employees are going from building global software products for [corporations] to building them for their own startups."

Top 5 Beverage Companies To Watch In Right Now

If, Coca-Cola’s (KO) stock price is anything to go by, the beverage company has been in need of a new look for a while now. And last night it delivered big changes that it hopes will beget a more successful, new Coca-Cola, not the success of New Coke.

European Pressphoto Agency

Coca-Cola has gained 8.7% this year, while PepsiCo (PEP) has risen 18% and Monster Beverage (MNST) has advanced 17%. Dr. Pepper Snapple (DPS) is up 7.9% in 2013.

So what’s actually changed? Let Deutsche Bank explain:

Coke announced the resignation of Steve Cahillane, former head of the Americas and on the short list of candidates to ultimately succeed Chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent when the time comes. As part of this move, former President of North America Sandy Douglas is returning to his old role while continuing to hold his position as Global Chief Customer Officer. Additionally, Coca-Cola Refreshments, the company’s owned and currently refranchising North American bottling operations will become part of the bottler triage group, Bottling Investments Group, run by President Irial Finan. With so much in flux and a no or low calorie naturally flavored soft drink using proprietary and exclusive Reb X likely forthcoming next year, the timing of these changes is interesting and hopefully signals an acceleration in the pace of US bottler divestitures.

For Wall Street types, single-family foreclosures can be bought cheaply and in bulk, then fixed up and rented. Companies like the Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) and Colony Financial (NYSE: CLNY  ) have been very active in this market, with the former purchasing 16,000 homes just last year, and the latter ramping up its own portfolio to approximately 7,000. The folks at JPMorgan took a look at Chevron (CVX) and ExxonMobil (XOM) and came away feeling, well, unenthused. JPMorgan’s Phil Gresh andJohn Royall explain why they started ExxonMobil at Neutral…

Reuters

We initiate coverage of ExxonMobil shares with a Neutral rating and a December 2015 price target of $104/share. Within our integrated oil coverage universe, we seeExxonMobil as being more macro-oriented and defensive than peers. We see pricing (macro) as the main model driver, with some incremental help from margin levers like cost/mix. We also see some unique defensive characteristics at ExxonMobil, such as its top-tier FCF yield,
FCF/dividend coverage ratio and below-average financial leverage, which should allow for favorable return of capital versus peers in all of our scenario analyses. One additional lever to watch is acquisitions. The pool of candidates is vast and the desire to add inorganic reserves could grow if timing risks around Russian exploration grow; however, we expect a long-term, opportunistic orientation, given the likely ROCE headwind for any such deal. Thus, our base case assumes thatExxonMobil will hold its current course of top tier return of capital to shareholders, which could lead to a ~11% total return (including dividends) by year-end 2015 (group ~15%).

Advisors' Opinion:

US Energy (USEG), an independent energy company, focuses on the acquisition and development of oil and gas producing properties in the continental U.S. This stock closed up 6.9% to $3.53 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $3.29-$3.53

    52-Week Range: $1.45-$4.06

    Thursday's Volume: 116,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 219,710

From a technical perspective, USEG bounced sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $3.27 and back above its 50-day moving average of $3.45 with lighter-than-average volume. This stock recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $3.32, $3.21 and $3.27. Since finding buying interest at those levels, shares of USEG are now spiking higher and moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if USEG manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.65 to $3.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in USEG as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $3.27 or at $3.21 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 219,710 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then USEG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $4.06. Any high-volume move above that level will then give USEG a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.60 to $5.
