    Before the opening bell on Tuesday, financial data provider FactSet Research Systems Inc. (FDS) reported a 5% year-over-year increase in fourth quarter profits, which was aided by a 5.7% rise in revenues. Though these revenues were able to top Wall Street analysts’ estimates, the company’s adjusted earnings missed views.

    The Norwalk, Connecticut-based company posted a fourth quarter net income of $51.0 million, or $1.16 per share, up slightly from the $48.5 million, or $1.08 per share, earned in the same period a year ago.

    On an adjusted basis, FactSet’s quarterly net income came in at $52.84 million, or $1.20 per share. This adjusted net income excludes an after-tax charge of $1.84 million, or 4 cents per share. According to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, FactSet was expected to earn an adjusted $1.21 per share in the fourth quarter.

    The company’s quarterly revenues advanced to $219.33 million in the most recent quarter, up 5.7% from the $207.66 million posted in the fourth quarter of 2012. On average, analysts were expecting the company to see $218.93 million in revenues for the quarter.

    Looking forward, FactSet said it expects earnings to be between $1.21 and $1.24 in the first quarter of fiscal 2014. Furthermore, first quarter revenues are expected to come in between $222 million and $225 million. Analysts, on average, believe that FDS will earn $1.23 per share on revenues of $225.04 million in the first quarter of 2014.

    FactSet Research shares were down $1.10, or 0.98%, during pre-market trading on Tuesday. The stock is up 27.47% year-to-date.

    Before the bell on Tuesday, Factset Research Systems (FDS) announced its fiscal 2014 first quarter, with adjusted EPS rising 10% from last year’s same quarter.

    FDS Earnings in Brief

    -FDS’s Q1 revenue was up 6% to $223 million from last year’s Q1 revenue of $211 million
    -The company’s adjusted net income came in at $54.289 million, up 7% from last year’s $49.769 million.
    -Adjusted EPS came in at $1.22 for the quarter, up 10% from last year’s adjusted EPS figure of $1.11.
    -The company came in just below analysts’ estimates of $1.23 EPS on revenues of $223.66 million.
    -Looking forward to next quarter, Factset gave earnings guidance in the range of $1.20 to $1.23 per share, and Q2 revenue guidance in the range of $225 million to $228 million. The EPS guidance is below analysts’ estimate of $1.25, but the revenue guidance is in-line with analyst views.

    Philip Hadley, Factset’s chairman and CEO, had the following comments about the company’s Q1 report:�”Our investment discipline and proven business model continues to generate shareholder value as illustrated by our 10% adjusted EPS growth. Our buy-side client base is experiencing a healthy business cycle, but we are facing a challenging sell-side environment, which reduced organic ASV.”

    Factset most recently upped its dividend payout in July of this year, so it’s no surprise that the company did not announced a dividend change in its most recent earnings report. The company has a history of announcing a raise to its dividend in May, so investors should keep an eye on this company around then. Though the company did not change its dividend, it did announced that $300 million is being added to the company’s stock repurchase program.

FactSet Research's quarterly profit surged to $51 million, or $1.16 per share, from $48.5 million, or $1.08 per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding one-time items, its adjusted earnings came in at $1.20 per share, versus analysts' estimates of $1.21 per share. Its revenue rose 5.6 percent to $219.3 million. FactSet Research had expected earnings of $1.18 to $1.21 per share on revenue of $218 million to $221 million. For the current quarter, FactSet Research expects earnings of $1.21 to $1.24 per share on revenue of $222 million to $225 million. However, analysts were projecting a profit of $1.23 per share on revenue of $224 million.
